Bahamas Methodist Habitat was born out of the emergency response to Hurricane Andrew in 1992 after it raveaged the Bahamas. The Bahamas Conference of the Methodist Church (BCMC) had just become its own autonomous conference and what a way start off. Teams from the Bahamas and United States were called into action and many lives were changed and touched by the Disaster Relief efforts from the BCMC.
As years passed on many other lives were touched through their efforts after hurricanes swept across the Family Islands of the Bahamas. In 1997 however, a calling was put on Shaun Ingraham and Martin Gaitor’s hearts and Camp Symonette in James’ Cistern, Eleuthera became home base for local and international volunteer groups to get involved with the ongoing relief efforts. When hurricanes were not active, teams would come and assist with rebuilding lives and homes that had been destroyed through the season.
BMH is still very active in Disaster Relief, Response and Rebuilding efforts and continues to strive to be better equipped and prepared for the inevitable.
Our most recent efforts were in response to the Earthquake in Haiti and tornado on Grand Bahama.
Please contact us if you are interested and are able to be “on call” when a hurricane hits in the Bahamas so that we may organize our response teams. We need skilled and unskilled workers, pilots, planes, organizers, cooks and plenty of willing hands and feet.
